TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDER (TMD)

Treatment Name

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)

Doctor Name

Dr. Muhammad Yousuf

Your mouth is a reflection of your overall health

Certain dental treatments can help with orofacial pain, TMD, airway concerns, and more. They may even contribute to better general health. Dr. Muhammad Yousuf takes a detailed and careful approach to TMD treatment for every patient. Finding the root cause is the first step in understanding the problem and creating the right treatment plan.

TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint, which is the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull.
TMD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, a condition that affects the TMJ.

While TMJ and TMD are often confused, they are not the same. TMD commonly develops in people who have had a jaw injury or had teeth removed in the past.

Stress, frequent clenching, or grinding can also lead to TMD. Meanwhile, muscle tension in the face and neck—or a direct injury to the jaw joint—can contribute to TMJ problems.

Our TMD and TMJ Services at TMJ & Sleep Wellness Center may include:

  1. Orofacial Pain and TMD Diagnosis
  2. Precision Orthotics (Splints)
  3. Long-term Care for Chronic Orofacial Pain

Orofacial Pain and TMD Diagnosis

Pain in the head, neck, or jaw can sometimes be traced back to dental or systemic issues, known as Orofacial pain. Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) are one of the leading causes of this pain.

TMD is a complex condition that can cause discomfort, limited jaw movement, and pain in the TMJ and nearby tissues. More than 35 million adults are affected by TMD, yet finding skilled professionals who can accurately diagnose and treat it is often challenging.

At TMJ & Sleep Wellness Center, we use advanced technology to evaluate, diagnose, and address the root causes of TMD. Treatment is designed to bring long-lasting relief from pain and discomfort.

Therapy may involve custom-made precision orthotics, which help correct bite problems, reduce joint strain, and ease muscle overactivity like clenching or grinding.

In some cases, we may refer patients to trusted specialists in our network. For example, physical therapy can help with muscle soreness, neck alignment, posture, or even sleep-related concerns. Short-term medication may also be prescribed to ease inflammation and relax muscles. In rare, severe cases, surgical treatment may be needed.

TMD Therapy FAQs

No, most treatments for TMJ are not invasive or painful. When treating patients with TMJ, we believe “less is best”. We aim to determine the source of the problem and make necessary corrections without major procedures or surgery whenever possible. Therapies for TMJ may include lifestyle changes, removable orthotic devices, and changes to the occlusion (bite) to correct problems and misalignment.

No, non-invasive common dental procedures can address most TMJ issues. Surgery is only necessary for extreme TMJ issues or jaw deformities.

TMJ issues typically only resolve themselves in very mild or temporary cases. There is no way of predicting whether or not this will happen. If your TMJ pain is persistent or long-term, it will not go away without medical intervention from a qualified TMJ dentist.

Precision Orthotics (Splints)

Treatment for TMD often includes the use of precision orthotics designed specifically for each patient. These appliances help correct bite issues, reduce muscle activity such as clenching and grinding, and lower stress on the TMJ. While precision orthotics provide broad relief, splints and night guards can offer additional protection. These acrylic devices primarily safeguard the teeth. At TMJ & Sleep Wellness Center, we use advanced digital technology to customize each appliance with the highest accuracy.
